色漫天堂

Biography

Why did you decide to study a degree-level course?
I left college then moved to Devon and had a job at Asda but really wanted to join the police. I applied twice but couldn鈥檛 get through to the final round. Whilst at the interviews, I picked up that a lot of people had degrees so looked into doing Public Services at 色漫天堂, but Suzi Smale (in HE) suggested I do an Access course and then a degree to join the police later on.
I finished my Access course and got a Distinction and then went on to University of West London to do criminology, policing and forensic investigation. I then moved up there for 1 year, and in the last 2 years I commuted. I graduated with a First! And also got an award at graduation for 鈥漮utstanding dissertation鈥. It felt amazing!

Why did you choose to come to the University Centre for Northern Devon?
A friend鈥檚 son was going to 色漫天堂 and had always sworn by 色漫天堂 and said that 色漫天堂 is a very good place to study.

What were the highlights of your course/What did you most enjoy about studying at the University Centre?
The staff were all lovely. Everything was so easy 鈥 everything was explained so well. VJ who taught history was fantastic – never thought I鈥檇 be studying history again but it was so interesting.

Even though it was at the end of covid, I met lovely people and the people in the class are still friends. It was a leap of faith 鈥 it could have gone wrong but it could not have gone better! I felt really supported especially with UCAS application and personal statements. You were never made to feel like you couldn鈥檛 do it 鈥 you were always encouraged.

What does it mean to you now that you have gained these qualifications? Has it helped your career and/or your home life?
I come from a policing family, and to get this degree means a lot. My parents had successful careers yet I have taught them a few things from my course.
I鈥檝e secured a voluntary role with Devon & Cornwall police 鈥 鈥渓ocal policing support volunteer鈥 where I will be assisting police staff in finding opportunities for low level criminals (eg asbo, vandalism) to choose a deferred charge and take voluntary work in the community to help turn their life around. I want to work my way up and to give something back to the community.

Do you have any advice for someone thinking of studying for a degree-level course?
Believe in yourself. You can do it! I never thought in a million years that I could get a degree. Read and read, prepare for everything. No such thing as too much preparation. Organisation will help you though. If you鈥檙e thinking of joining 色漫天堂, just do it. If I could turn the clock back I would do it again. It has a special place in my heart.
